White Wine Schloss Gobelsburg Ried Lamm Erste Lage Gruner Veltliner 2020. No need to decant. Widely regarded as one of the most important wineries in Austria, Schloss Gobelsburg is particularly known for its Grüner Veltliner and Riesling wines. Here the wine production on the site dates back to 1171 and the monks of the Zwettl monastery managed the vineyards until 1995 when the company was taken over by Michael and Eva Moosbrugger. The Schloss Gobelsburg estate today covers 35 hectares of vineyards at various sites including the famous sites of Erste Lage Heiligenstein and Gaisberg for Riesling and Lamm, Steinsetz, Grub and Renner for Grüner Veltliner. The Lamm vineyard is located at the foot of the south-eastern slope of the Heiligenstein. In addition to the eroded Heiligenstein material (Permian, red silt), the soil has a higher percentage of clay. Slightly sloped, south-facing, and well-ventilated, the grapes grow to create a wine that matures in double-walled Manhartsberg oak casks generating a powerful yet elegant personality. This Gruner Veltliner has a spicy and powerful but not overly fruity nose, with notes of pear, burnt tobacco, quince, and apricot. On the palate, the wine is densely fruity, with good depth, excellent minerality and concentration, and lively acidity. It is a powerful wine, and extraordinarily gritty with a nice dense finish and a touch of flavor. Try it with asparagus risotto, artichokes or white fish.

White Wine Schloss Gobelsburg Ried Spiegel Reserve Gruner Veltliner 2020. Drink it now or cellar for five years or more. No need to decant. Schloss Gobelsburg is a very ancient winery in the Kamptal Danube region. Here the Cistercian monks of Burgundy planted their first vineyards in 1171. Today the company, owned by the Moosbruggers since 1996, focuses on wines of typical origin of the Danube appellations. The company is a member of the “Traditional Austrian Cellars”, which establish a classification of locations in Austria and is considered a specialist for Austrian quality sparkling wine, fresh climate red wines, based on Pinot Noir, and sweet wines. The Ried Spiegel Reserve Gruner Veltliner comes from a single plot with vines that are up to 50 years old, and it’s aged in used oak barrels. The wine has a medium golden color with silver reflections. The nose is an elegant mix of ripe apple and pear, dried apricot, hints of tropical fruit, hay, herbal spices, and chalky minerals. All this is well distributed on a slightly creamy palate with good fruity juiciness. A perfect balance between acidity and body, with a pleasant tropical finish, completes the tasting. This is a high quality wine that makes a perfect aperitif but also goes very well with food. It is excellent with pork, cold cuts, and vegetarian preparations.

White Wine Sphera White Concepts First Page 2020. Serve well chilled. Unusually for Israel, Sphera winery only produces white wines. Sphera’s founder Doron Rav Hon studied winemaking in Burgundy where he fell in love with the region’s world famous white wines. Along with his wife Sima who runs the operations of the winery, Doron created Sphera in Israel’s Judean Hills to prove that this ancient winemaking country is capable of making its own sensational white wines. The estate’s vineyards are planted in the valleys of Givat Yeshayahu which has an ideal microclimate for premium white winemaking. Cool breezes consistently blow through the valley even on hot summer days and cold air sinks to the valley floor at night, helping to keep plenty of freshness and aromatics in the grapes. This stunning white blend is composed primarily of Semillon along with Roussanne and Chenin Blanc. The vines are planted alongside the Shua stream on a mixture of alluvial, limestone and terra rossa or red soils”. These help to add a subtle hint of minerality to the rich tropical fruit and citrusy notes which dominate the nose and palate. The finish is pure and aromatic with hints of honeysuckle and rose petals, making it a great aperitif or partner for delicate sushi, salads, fish or seafood dishes.
