White Wine La Bollina Gavi Ventola 2020. Located within the historic area dedicated to the production of Gavi DOCG, La Bollina, for centuries the residence of the Marquises Figari of Genoa, extends into a landscape made up of gentle slopes, selected vineyards and chestnut woods. Inside the estate, in addition to the farm and the well-equipped production cellar, there are three elegant accommodation facilities: an Art Nouveau villa transformed into a 4-star luxury hotel with an adjoining park and adjacent Congress Center, a modern 4-star hotel and, for golf enthusiasts, a 9-hole course that winds through the vineyards where the wines are produced. The cellar, completely renovated, now has the most modern winemaking techniques. The Gavi Ventola comes from Cortese grapes vinified in purity. Cortese is an indigenous vine, which has been cultivated since the eighteenth century in the areas of Serravalle Scrivia, where the winery is located. The grapes, carefully selected during the harvest phase, undergo a short maceration, before being softly pressed and alcoholically fermented in steel. The wine then remains in steel to refine for a few months, before being bottled and marketed. This intensely yellow wine shows aromas of jasmine and almond blossoms, accompanied by slight hints of pear, yellow peach, and vanilla. The acidity is good and provides freshness, contrasting and balancing the natural softness of the slight over-ripening of the grapes. It will be great with shellfish, raw fish and white meats.

White Wine La Crema Monterey Chardonnay 2020. Inspired by the foggy surroundings of the Russian River Valley, La Crema harbours a deep love for cool-climate grapes of all kinds. In the early days, when the winery was known as La Crema Viñera”, grapes were sourced from the valley itself and coastal Sonoma regions. It is now under the ownership of Jackson Family Wines who have enhanced that vineyard portfolio greatly, giving La Crema access to cool climate vines all over California and Oregon. The winery is currently spearheaded by New Zealander Craig McAllister, a well-travelled oenologist who brings wine-making experience from Australia, Chile and Cyprus. The team at La Crema still implement methods that respect the early days of the winery, by barrel fermenting Chardonnay and crushing grapes by hand. Sharp scents of lemon zest, pineapple and savoury baked apple waft from this attractive golden wine. The Chardonnay grapes were plucked from Monterey and spent 8 months maturing in French oak barrels. Pear and citrus fruits marry on the tongue, punctuated by an understated minerality. It bears a balanced, pleasant acidity and a long-lasting finish. Serve chilled and pair it with shellfish dishes or a fruit salad.
White Wine La Raia Gavi 2020. This racy Gavi opens with refreshing notes of citrus, peach and stony minerality while the first sip reveals a mouthwatering acidity, light body and pure, clean finish. The must is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the vibrant natural character of the Cortese grape and produce a light and elegant wine. The bright flavour profile makes this a great choice to enjoy as an aperitif or alongside seafood, fish or tomato-based pasta dishes as well as charcuterie and cheeses. The grapes for this delicious white are grown biodynamically without any herbicides or pesticides on the Ravi estate which is set in the heart of Gavi’s rolling hills. The estate was purchased in 2003 by the Rossi Cairo family who have worked hard to restore biodiversity and nurture the local ecosystem. Wherever possible the estate seeks to work in harmony with Mother Nature and has been Demeter-certified since 2007. They aim to produce the very best quality grapes possible which in turn allows them to craft top quality wines from indigenous local grape varieties. Winemaking on the estate is overseen by Piero Ballario who consults for many excellent small Italian wineries based in the Langhe and beyond.
