White Wine Hahn Chardonnay 2019. Served chilled. Founded forty years ago by Nicky and Gaby Hahn, Hahn Family Wines is the realisation of a dream to make top quality Californian wines on the Hahn’s estate in Monterey County. After purchasing the property the Hahns released the excellent winemaking potential of the land which had been used by Spanish missionaries to plant grapes during the 1790s. In the 20th century the land fell into disuse and was used as grazing land until the Hahns arrived. The Hahn family have played a key role in local winemaking and in 1991 Nicky succeeded in getting the Santa Lucia Highlands recognised as an individual AVA or American Viticultural Area. Chardonnay is one of the varieties that thrives here and this bottling from the Hahns is predominantly sourced from Arroyo Seco where the vines are cooled by winds from Monterey Bay. This helps the grapes to ripen slowly, developing complexity and plenty of enchanting aromatic character. On the nose there are hints of tropical fruit, honeysuckle and lemon zest while the first sip reveals a bright acidity, medium body and pure, clean finish. A great wine to pair with roasted chicken, Mediterranean vegetables or creamy fish dishes.

White Wine Hess Collection Select Chardonnay 2019. Prolific art collector and wine enthusiast Donald Hess became fascinated by mountain winegrowing while on a business trip to Napa Valley in the 1970s. After extensive research into the terroir, in 1978 he took the plunge and purchased 900 acres of land on Mount Veeder in Napa. Hess’s gamble paid off and today the winery has a reputation for crafting elegant yet powerful mountain wines which express the natural beauty of their hillside vineyards. Hess’s minimalist winemaking approach begins in the vineyard itself. Their Director of Winemaking Dave Guffy spends his days walking the vines and continually tasting the grapes during harvest to ensure they are picked at optimum ripeness. For this stunning Chardonnay Guffy sources fruit from their 352 acre Shirtail estate in Monterey. The cool sea breezes help create ideal growing conditions for Chardonnay, preserving plenty of freshness and aromatics in the fruit at harvest time. Bright apple, mango, lychee and citrus notes define the nose, along with delicate undertones of woodsmoke, toast and spice from the oak ageing. On the palate there’s a mouthwatering natural acidity which makes this a great aperitif or partner for spicy Asian salads, fresh seafood, or a grilled tuna steak served with burnt lemon and zingy salsa.
White Wine Hess Napa Valley Chardonnay 2019. These steep vineyards on Mount Veeder were first used to produce wine in the 1860s, but it wasn’t until the late 1970s that Donald Hess founded his namesake estate here. An art lover and a wine enthusiast, Donald first visited the region while on a business trip to Napa. This trip inspired a full-blown search for the ideal terroir for winemaking, and in 1978 he purchased 900 acres here on the remote frontiers of the Napa Valley. This sublime Chardonnay is a great introduction to Hess’ Su’skol estate which is set in one of Napa’s coolest sub-regions. The 175 acre property benefits from cooling fogs and breezes from the nearby San Pablo Bay, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and fully over a prolonged period. Winemaker Dave Guffy ferments 70% of the fruit in stainless steel tanks to showcase its natural beauty, with the remainder fermented in French oak. The final step is to leave the wine to mature in barrels for 9 months before bottling. The result is an elegant and perfectly-poised Chardonnay that combines subtle oak influence with plenty of natural varietal character. On the nose there’s delicate hints of jasmine, ripe orchard fruit, and spice, while the first sip reveals a creamy texture and ripe peach, apricot and pineapple flavours which linger on the tongue.
