White Wine Framingham Nobody’s Hero Sauvignon Blanc 2021. The Framingham estate was established by Rex Brooke-Taylor, an engineer from Wellington, in 1981. During the early years Rex collaborated with neighbouring wineries and used their winemaking facilities to get his boutique operation off the ground. Today the winery is known throughout New Zealand for their stunning, precise expressions of classic Marlborough wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The Nobody’s Hero Sauvignon Blanc was born out of winemaker Dr Andrew Hedley’s passion for the punk rock band Stiff Little Fingers. Made in a bright and fresh style, this classic Marlborough Sauvignon is crafted from fruit sourced from five different sites which are vinified separately. The must is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the distinctive varietal character and Andrew Hedley then decides upon the final blend after extensive tasting and testing sessions. The result is a delicious white which opens with evocative aromas of grapefruit, fresh herbs and nettles. The first sip reveals a vibrant freshness and intense aromas of citrus, tropical fruit and subtle hints of green bell pepper. The crisp and lively character of this wine make it ideal to enjoy as an aperitif or alongside dishes like moules frites, leafy green salads or roast chicken.

White Wine Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2021. The pale lemon is the first indication of a classical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. On the nose are intense aromas of fresh cut grass, nettles, grapefruit and herbs married with a mineral note. The palate explodes with racy acidity that is fresh and shows the clean fruit and notes of citrus and minerality that is so typical of the area. The finish is medium and the mouth feel is cleansing and very refreshing. Perfect food matches would include Tuna, shellfish, summer salad or frittata. Alternatively, it makes an excellent and refreshing aperitif. Whitehaven’s philosophy on winemaking is quality first and foremost. They look for consistency, intensity and quality while at the same time ensuring elegance in all of their wines. Using a mix of Old World knowledge and New World techniques, Whitehaven developed a reputation based on consistently producing high quality and interesting wines. For this Sauvignon Blanc the machine harvested fruit was harvested in the evening when the temperature was cooler and immediately pressed to ensure minimum skin contact. This was to retain as much of the varietal characteristics as possible. Fermentation was carried out at low temperatures and in stainless steel.

White Wine Palliser Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2021. Serve well chilled. Palliser Estate owns around 85 hectares of prime vineyards in Martinborough which they use to make some of the region’s finest Sauvignon Blancs. Although the first grapes were only harvested in 1989, chief winemaker Allan Johnson has won over 80 gold medals for his wines since joining Palliser in 1991. Today the estate is in the process of converting all of its vineyards to organic management and instituting pioneering sustainable practices to ensure Palliser continues making award-winning wines for generations to come. To express the pure varietal character of Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc, Allan Johnson ferments the wine in stainless steel tanks and then matures it on the lees for six months. This creates a lively, fruit-forward Sauvignon Blanc which exudes lime zest, passion fruit and white peaches on the nose. These intense aromas carry through onto the palate along with hints of dried herbs and a flinty mineral character. From the first sip there’s also a tingly acidity which helps to quench your thirst on even the hottest of days and the layers of concentrated flavours linger long on the tongue. The bright freshness makes this Sauvignon Blanc an excellent match for dishes that can be challenging to pair with wine like Thai red curry, ceviche, or Vietnamese pho.
