White Wine Ceretto Blange Langhe Arneis 2020. Founded in the 1930s by Riccardo Ceretto, this well-respected producer played a key role in the modern winemaking history of the Piedmont. Riccardo’s sons Bruno and Marcello were at the forefront of the trend towards estate-bottled single vineyard wines, establishing Ceretto’s long-standing reputation for exceptional Barolos. The estate has now grown to some 160 hectares and is run by the third generation represented by Lisa, Roberto, Alessandro and Federico. As well as their world-class reds, Ceretto also produces other Piedmontese classics like this crisp and refreshing Langhe Arneis white wine. The eyecatching label with the distinctive B for Blange is the work of renowned designer Silvio Coppola. The wine is made from organically-grown grapes sourced from Vezza d’Alba and Castellinado, and the fruit is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve plenty of aromatics and natural acidity. Bursting with bright citrus, apple and pear on the nose, the first sip reveals a mouthwatering acidity, light body and dry finish with lingering notes of lemon zest. A fantastic wine to serve as an aperitif thanks to its freshness and balance, or as a partner for sushi, seafood, grilled fish or creamy risottos and pasta dishes.

White Wine Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2020. In 1985, the pioneering spirit brought founder David Hohnen and winemaker Kevin Judd to Marlborough, where they produced an aromatic and bold Sauvignon Blanc. Cloudy Bay was one of Marlborough’s top five wineries and quickly gained worldwide fame as a recognized producer of New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blanc. Since then, the company has continued to expand with an excellent range of products. Most of the vineyards are planted with New Zealand’s successful grape variety, Sauvignon Blanc. There are also Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as some Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Cloudy Bay is named after Captain Thoas Cook, who sailed into the misty bay at the eastern end of the Wairau Valley on his voyage of discovery in 1770. Cloudy Bay Chardonnay is produced exclusively with Chardonnay grapes, sourced from four vineyards located in separate sub-regions, Brancott, Fairhall, Ben Morven and Central Wairau ValleyMix, on draining gravel and clay-based soils. After soft pressing, the grapes ferment in French oak barrels at a controlled temperature. Subsequently the wine ages in barrique for about 12 months, before being bottled. This Chardonnay is characterized by a straw yellow color with greenish reflections. The nose is immediately fresh and captivating, with notes of candied citrus, stone fruit, orchard flowers, and subtle hints of spices. On the palate, it is round, with sweet citrus and white peach flavors, wrapped in layers of custard. Perfect with seafood, shellfish and basically any kind of fish recipe.

White Wine D’Arenberg Dry Dam Riesling 2020. D’Arenberg in Australia’s McLaren Vale might be best known for its old vine Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines, but they also produce some sensational whites like this crisp dry Riesling. According to the winery its named after the dam built by their neighbours in 1992 which failed to hold water. Unlike those unfortunate farmers, d’Arenberg makes this wine without irrigating their old Riesling vines. The lack of water forces the vines to dig deep for moisture, creating low yields and aromatic, intensely-flavoured grapes with plenty of character. Once in the winery the grapes are crushed and chilled before undergoing a long, cool fermentation process which is stopped early to leave a tiny bit of residual sugar to balance the high acidity. Bright green apple, lemon and subtle floral notes dominate on the nose, while on the palate there are hints of ripe pear, lime and tangy sherbet. The mouthwatering freshness and light body make this a great wine to share with friends as an aperitif or to savour alongside fresh oysters, spicy Asian salads, or sushi. It’s ideal to drink now, although it can also be kept for a few more years if desired.
