White Wine 689 Cellars Submission Chardonnay 2020. The creators of 689 Cellars chose the name after visiting Asia and experiencing Chinese culture where certain numbers are considered to have special lucky or auspicious characteristics. The number six, for example, is thought to represent movement or flow, empowering us to live with energy and happiness, while the number eight is linked with unlimited potential and prosperity thanks to its symmetrical shape. Finally there’s the number nine, one of the most important numbers, which is related to permanence and longevity. These lucky numbers certainly seem to have helped 689 Cellars create some truly delicious wines like this Chardonnay. Fruit for this cuvee is selected from top quality plots in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, and Napa’s Carmeros and Monterey County sub-regions where conditions are ideal for growing elegant and refined Chardonnay. Once in the winery the grapes are carefully sorted and vinified with the young wine ageing in French oak barrels for 8 months before bottling. This helps to add a rich, creamy texture and seductive hints of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak to the intense tropical and stone fruit notes from the Chardonnay grapes. A great wine to share with family and friends alongside a big platter of cheeses, leafy summer salads, or roast chicken.

White Wine Ca dei Frati Brolettino Lugana 2020. This unusual Italian white is crafted from the Turbiana grape, a variety that is little known outside its homeland of Lugana along the southern banks of Italy’s famous Lake Garda. Thought to be related to Verdicchio grape, the variety typically produces charming tropical pineapple, mandarin orange and bitter almond notes along with hints of rose petals. Ca dei Frati harvests the grapes for this wine in the middle of October from vines which were planted in 1971. The young wine is then vinified in stainless steel tanks and matured in oak barrels for 10 months before bottling. The result is an opulent, creamy-textured wine with attractive ripe stone fruit notes complemented by vanilla and honey from the barrel maturation. The intense flavour profile makes this a great partner for roast chicken, creamy fish dishes, and aged cheeses. The earliest reference to Ca dei Frati dates back to 1782, but the modern winery was founded in 1939 by Felice Dal Cero who realised the area’s exceptional viticultural potential. Over the past couple of decades the Del Cero family have transformed the winery into Lugana’s top producer. They create crisp, characterful whites from typical local varieties as well as elegant, well-balanced reds from the family’s 200 hectares of estate vineyards.
White Wine Allram Alte Reben Gruner Veltliner 2020. The Allram estate is one of the Kamptal’s finest wineries thanks to the family’s passion for winemaking and their insistence on letting Mother Nature do most of the work. This small but prestigious Austrian wine region is best known for its steep and stony vineyards perched above the river Kamp which offer ideal conditions for premium winemaking. The Allram family in particular have exceptional vineyards including prized plots in the legendary crus of Heiligenstein, Gaisberg, and Renner. This dynamic and youthful Gruner is crafted from old vines or Alte Ruben” planted in the Mittelhasel vineyard on the family’s estate. The distinctive loess soils and south-facing aspect help to produce an intense yet balanced wine with plenty of natural freshness and elegant aromatics. The fruit is all grown organically and farmed sustainably to produce the best quality ingredients possible for their delicious wines. Once in the winery the fruit is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve plenty of natural freshness and varietal character. The young wine is then left to mature on the lees over the winter until bottling in April. This helps to add extra texture and complexity, producing a medium bodied Gruner with a creamy, unctuous texture and ripe apricot, pineapple and honeyed notes.
